A squall line less than about 100 km ahead of a cold front, in the warm sector, having an orientation more or less parallel to the cold front.
Industry:Weather
A spectroscope with a photographic or other recording device to capture an image of the entire spectrum, or portions thereof, at one instant in time.
Industry:Weather
A spike or pillar of compacted snow, firn, or glacier ice caused by differential melting and evaporation. Necessary for this formation are 1) air temperature near freezing; 2) dewpoint much below freezing; and 3) strong insolation. Consequently, penitent ice is most developed on low-latitude mountains, especially the Chilean Andes, but has been found in polar regions. Penitents are oriented individually toward the noonday sun, and usually occur in east–west lines. The term is derived from the Spanish nieve penitente (penitent snow), which is still widely used throughout the literature.
Industry:Weather
A spectral model in which the nonlinear terms in the governing equations are computed in physical space. Thus, for every model time step, some fields must be transformed to physical space where nonlinear terms are computed and then transformed back to spectral space where they can be applied. These nonlinear terms may consist of advection terms, pressure gradient terms, and energy conversion terms, as well as parameterized physics terms. This is the most common kind of spectral model, as it avoids the expensive computation of interactions among modes in spectral space.
Industry:Weather
A specified pattern for entering, on a weather map, the meteorological symbols that represent the state of the weather at a particular observing station.
Industry:Weather
A special case of Bénard cells with an aspect ratio of 3:1. It was first observed in the laboratory as convection in a shallow liquid, heated from below (as in a skillet) or cooled from above by evaporation (as in metallic paint). Such observations have similarities to convection in shallow cells in atmospheric layers as in cirrocumulus, with upward motion at the center, where cloud forms, and descending motion at the edges, which are clear.
Industry:Weather
A special device used to mark the surface between old and new snow. It consists of a piece of white duck 28 inches square, having in each corner triangular pockets in which are inserted slats placed diagonally to keep the mat taut and flat. See snow board, snow gauge.
Industry:Weather
A southeasterly or easterly wind on the southeast coast of Spain in summer; usually an extension of the sirocco. It is hot and humid and sometimes brings rain; when dry it is dusty. Compare solaire.
Industry:Weather
A southwest wind of the Adriatic Sea; it is often violent.
Industry:Weather
A southwest wind on Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
