Rainfall intercepted by tree canopies and transported directly to the ground via the stems and trunks.
Industry:Weather
Rainfall measured at a particular site.
Industry:Weather
Radiometer designed to measure only thermal infrared radiation incident on the surface of an infinitesimally small sphere.
Industry:Weather
Radiometer designed to measure both solar and thermal infrared radiation incident on the surface of an infinitesimally small sphere.
Industry:Weather
Radiometer designed to measure only solar radiation incident on the surface of an infinitesimally small sphere. Practically, the sphere of the radiometer is at least 2 cm in diameter.
Industry:Weather
Quantum radiation (particles or photons) of limited penetrating power, typically of lower frequency or longer wavelength. A 10-cm thickness of lead is usually used as the criterion upon which the relative penetrating power of various types of radiation is based. Hard radiation will penetrate such a shield; soft radiation will not. See hard radiation.
Industry:Weather
Quasi-continuous sequences of VHF (very high frequency) radiation emanating from lightning that is associated with high-speed K-change activity along pre-ionized lightning channels. The process was named by David Proctor (1974).
Industry:Weather
Radar measurements based on comparing the polarization properties of the transmitted and received signals. See polarimetric radar.
Industry:Weather
Radiant energy incident on a unit surface over some specified time period; units are joules per square meter (J m−2).
Industry:Weather
Radiant flux per unit area leaving a plane surface; no longer used as a substitute for emittance. In current usage the equivalent term flux density is preferred, or irradiance is adapted to include emission from a surface; units are watts per square meter (W m−2).
