A heat index that relates the development of plants, insects, and disease organisms to environmental air temperature. Analogous to growing degree-day (GDD), GDH is calculated by subtracting a base temperature from an hourly environmental temperature measurement and values less than zero are set to zero. A summation of hourly GDH is related to development. The temperature threshold (base temperature) below which development either slows or stops is species dependent.

An algorithm to compute rapidly the digital form of the discrete Fourier transform. The procedure requires that the length of the data series undergoing transformation be an integral power of two, which is often achieved by truncating the series or extending it with zeros. More flexible mixed-radix algorithms have been developed that allow data series of any length. They gain efficiency as the prime factors of the length become small, and they are equivalent to the FFT when the data series length is a power of two.

A characteristic feature in electric field records directly beneath a thundercloud in which the electric field momentarily reverses polarity during a burst of intense precipitation. The timescale for these events is of the order of minutes. The physical origins of the FEAWP are still unresolved.

Vertical coordinate for atmospheric models defined as the potential temperature of the model atmosphere. In practice the isentropic vertical coordinate is replaced by or changed gradually to a terrain- following coordinate near the ground; a change to pressure coordinates near the top of the model atmosphere has also been used. Within Newtonian mechanics, a reference frame relative to which every point mass not subjected to a net force is unaccelerated. Within relativistic mechanics, a reference frame is inertial in a (local) region of space and time if every point mass in this region remains in uniform motion. According to the principle of relativity, all the laws of physics have the same form (and contain the same numerical constants) when expressed relative to any inertial reference frame.
