The most common system for representing wind speed, to the nearest 5 knots, in symbolic form on synoptic charts. It consists of drawing the appropriate number of half-barbs, barbs, and pennants from the end of the wind-direction shaft. In this system, a half-barb represents 5 knots, a barb 10 knots, and a pennant 50 knots.
Industry:Weather
The minimum ceiling and/or visibility under which an aircraft may be landed with the use of ground-controlled approach (GCA). The pilot must be qualified to use GCA (and the aircraft must be equipped with the necessary radio equipment) before GCA minimums are applicable to the particular flight. At most airports GCA minimums are less than other minimums because of the double check on the “glide path” position of the aircraft.
Industry:Weather
The minimum temperature shown by a minimum thermometer exposed in an open situation with its bulb at the level of the tops of the grass blades in short turf.
Industry:Weather
The manner in which fire reacts to the variables fuel, weather, and topography.

The Maltese and best-known variant of a term for a strong northeast wind in the central and western Mediterranean and adjacent European land areas (stronger than the levante). It occurs either with high pressure over central Europe or the Balkans and low pressure over Libya, when it may continue for up to five days, or with the passage of a depression to south or southeast, when it lasts only a day or two. It is most frequent in winter. The weather varies with the type of pressure distribution and the onshore or offshore direction of the wind. In Malta the gregale raises dangerous seas in the harbor. The principal variant is the grégal of the Côte d'Azur (French Mediterranean coast), humid and rainy because it is a wind off the Mediterranean deflected by the Alpine Massif (gargal of the Roussillon region). This is mainly a summer wind and dangerous for vines as it favors mildew. In Provençe and Languedoc (southern France) it is the gregau, in Spain and Minorca guergal, and in Corsica grécale; these winds are cold and dry and bring spring frosts. Compare greco, levantera, lombarde.
Industry:Weather
The Mach number of the total airframe (entire aircraft) as contrasted with the local Mach number of a section of the airframe.
Industry:Weather
The magnitude (speed) of the flood tide. See also flood current.
Industry:Weather
The low-frequency ocean swell that commonly arrives at the coast before the primary swell generated by a distant storm.
Industry:Weather
The lowest frequency or longest wavelength defined by the length of the data set. It has exactly one cycle per total length of record.
Industry:Weather
The lowest energy level of an atom or molecule, corresponding to the most stable configuration of the atoms and electrons. At the relatively cold temperatures encountered in the atmosphere, most species normally exist in their ground states. Excitation to higher energy levels usually occurs via the absorption of radiation.
