Company Profile:
The American Meteorological Society promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, AMS has a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, ...
The automatic sequential display of a series of images containing cloud information. The number of images and the interimage delay are parameters that define the smoothness of the motion resulting from the animation as well as its total duration.
Industry:Weather
The average value of a set of measurements determined by using the consensus averaging technique.
Industry:Weather
The apparent sphere of infinite radius, having Earth as its center. It is upon the “inner surface” of this sphere that all heavenly bodies, the ecliptic, and the celestial equator appear. Disregarding the effects of topography and refraction near the horizon, for practical purposes half of this sphere may be considered visible from any point on the earth's surface at any time.
Industry:Weather
The atmospheric pressure computed for the level of the climatological station elevation. This is employed so that all climatic records for a given location have a common reference, and it may or may not be the same as station pressure. See also actual pressure, sea level pressure.
Industry:Weather
The area within a circulation of a wave cyclone where relatively cold air can be found. Typically, it lies behind the cold front associated with a cyclone.
Industry:Weather
The amount of precipitation captured by a rain gauge.
Industry:Weather
The amount of sky estimated to be covered by a specified cloud type or level (partial cloud amount) or by all cloud types and levels (total cloud amount). The estimate is made to the nearest octa (eighth).
Industry:Weather
The apparent force in a rotating system, deflecting masses radially outward from the axis of rotation, with magnitude per unit mass ω2R, where ω is the angular speed of rotation and R is the radius of curvature of the path. This magnitude may also be written as V2/R, in terms of the linear speed V. This force (per unit mass) is equal and opposite to the centripetal acceleration. The centrifugal force on the earth and atmosphere due to rotation about the earth's axis is incorporated with the field of gravitation to form the field of gravity.
Industry:Weather
The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, most commonly expressed as a mixing ratio by volume, usually in units of parts per million by volume (ppmv). The 1995 concentration of 360 ppmv is more than 25% greater than the preindustrial (i.e., eighteenth century) value of 280 ppmv.
Industry:Weather
The amount of an atmospheric trace gas found in a vertical column of the atmosphere, usually expressed in units of molecules per unit area. Most often used in reference to ozone. See Dobson unit.
