Conceptualization of the processes associated with the production and loss of sulfur gases in the atmosphere. The cycle consists of 1) the emission of reduced sulfur gases (such as dimethyl sulfide, carbonyl sulfide) by biological material; 2) the oxidation of these gases to sulfur dioxide or sulfuric acid in the atmosphere; and 3) the subsequent deposition of these acidic species to the earth's surface.

An instrument for measuring differences of pressure. The weight of a column of liquid enclosed in a tube is balanced by the pressures applied at its opposite ends, and the pressure difference is computed from the hydrostatic equation. A mercury barometer is a type of manometer.

A frequent condition in which the tropopause appears not as a continuous single “surface” of discontinuity between the troposphere and stratosphere but as a series of quasi-horizontal “leaves” that are partly overlapping in steplike arrangement. The multiple tropopause is most common above regions of large horizontal temperature contrast in the troposphere. In the more extreme conditions the components of the multiple tropopause are not distinct, and the tropopause is then just a deep zone of transition between troposphere and stratosphere.

Industry:Weather
Sea ice that has survived more than two summer melt seasons. Such ice is typically 3 m or more thick, is less saline, and has smoother hummocks and ridges than does younger ice. Undeformed multiyear ice is distinguished by its undular surface (remnants of drained or refrozen melt ponds). Multiyear ridges are distinct from first-year ridges in that they are typically smaller, more rounded, nearly solid ice and are therefore a serious impediment to surface ships.

Period of the year characterized by weather conditions of a particular type over a large area of the globe. The term is used in long-range forecasting in the former USSR.
