The steering of an atmospheric disturbance in the direction of the thermal wind in its vicinity; equivalent to steering along thickness lines. For this purpose the thermal wind is usually taken from the earth's surface to a level in the middle troposphere.
Industry:Weather
Tide occurring when the moon is near maximum declination; the diurnal inequality is then at a maximum. Compare equatorial tide, spring tide, neap tide.
Industry:Weather
The stretching (deformation) of a column that contains a vortex.
Industry:Weather
Volume of water stored between any two specified points along a stream, including both the channel and the flood plain.
Industry:Weather
The sensitivity of water supply systems to climatic fluctuations.
Industry:Weather
The region of a vortex between a supercritical upstream flow incapable of supporting upstream-propagating centrifugal waves and a subcritical flow that allows downstream- propagating centrifugal waves. The region is usually marked by abrupt swelling and often turbulence and reverse axial flow in the downstream side. Vortex breakdown is sometimes observed in tornadoes. See hydraulic jump.
Industry:Weather
The specific-volume anomaly (steric anomaly) that the seawater at any point would attain if the seawater were brought isothermally to a pressure of one standard atmosphere. In other words, thermosteric anomaly is the specific-volume anomaly calculated for the given salinity and temperature but for a standard pressure.
Industry:Weather
The zone between ground surface and the regional water table. It includes the unsaturated zone and the capillary fringe (tension saturated zone).
